My Journey Into Credit Card Rewards - And How You Can Start Yours Today

Welcome to Points of Travel!  This blog has been a long time coming.  For those that know me, you know I LOVE talking about anything and everything related to credit card points.  But we’ll get to that, for those that don’t know me let me introduce myself, my name is Kyle Campbell and I consider myself a pretty avid player in the points and miles game.

I’ve been in the credit card rewards game for the better part of a decade and a half and I’ve held many different credit cards over the years.  In the beginning, I started out on team CASHBACK and enjoyed finding ways to maximize the cashback I earned to help reduce the costs of other things I had to pay for, whether that was my membership to Costco or just an occasional statement credit for a purchase that I had made.  Eventually I started looking more into travel miles and points, and the rest as they say, is history. Over the course of the last 15 years, I’ve used many different cards from all different banks like Capital One, Barclays, Discover, Chase and American Express.  It’s been an amazing journey thus far and I feel like I’ve just started to scratch the surface.

Before I go any further, I just want to disclaimer that this isn’t financial advice in any way.  The strategies that I use don’t involve me using my credit cards for unnecessary spending just to earn points.  I always aim to pay off my cards within the same month so that my wife and I don’t carryover a balance and pay interest.  So, I encourage you if you’re reading this to utilize your credit cards responsibly.  Ok enough serious talk, let’s get back to this introduction!

So where did the idea to start this blog come from?  I want to say I really started considering this around late summer 2024.  Most of 2024 was trying to strategize how to earn the most amount of points that my wife and I could based off of our regular spending with the goal of using them for our next big trip to Japan. 

I’ve had many conversations with family and friends who either shared the same passion or were asking me for my thoughts on what avenue they should take based on their travel goals.  There was one moment however that really solidified the idea for me.  One evening I was at a family get together and I was talking with one of my cousins whom I regularly talk about investing with.  He always shares his investing knowledge with me and somewhere along the lines I started talking credit cards with him.  Those conversations have been cool opportunities for us to bond over, and it was at this particular family function where we were talking about credit cards again and he told me I should really think about creating something, like this blog; a place where I can share what I know and the different tactics I’ve learned when it comes to this whole credit card rewards game.

So here we are!  It took me a little while from that first thought in late 2024.  But, I’m taking that leap and seeing where this goes.  I honestly don’t know what will become of this.  I just know that this is a topic that I really enjoy talking about and discussing with others (outside of cars and auto racing haha). I’m excited to share my strategies and what I’ve learned over the years.  And maybe, just maybe, I’ll meet some amazing people along the way!
